Robotaxis are real and improving, and for short in-zone city trips they'll be a fine option once they open to the public here (today's San Diego service is employee-only, launched July 8, 2026). But they're geofenced, currently can't use freeways, can't do the airport from the suburbs or intercity, can't carry your bags, and have no human in the loop. When to choose what (honestly)
Choose a robotaxi when…
You want a short, private, in-zone city ride with no tipping and no conversation, the price is good, and you're not carrying much — once it actually launches in San Diego. For that, it's a genuinely nice experience.
Choose a local driver when…
