Do You Need a Car at SDSU?

With a Trolley station on campus and discounted transit passes, going car-free saves a student real money — here's the honest math.

Airport or trip home? (858) 522-0264
Fall 2026 move-in (verified Jul 24, 2026): SDSU housing move-in runs Aug 19–21, 2026 (housing.sdsu.edu). You don’t need a car at SDSU — you need a ride on the handful of days that matter: move-in day with a packed load, SAN airport runs, and trips home. EGT covers exactly those — flat rate, named driver, 100% electric. Call or text (858) 522-0264.
SDSU Parent Pilot — Fall 2026: a monthly private-transportation plan for SDSU families — scheduled runs, SAN airport pickups, and one named driver your student gets to know. Capped at 5 families for the fall pilot. Text or call (858) 522-0264 to hold a waitlist spot.

TL;DR

SDSU sits on its own Trolley station (Green Line) to Mission Valley and Downtown, and students can buy discounted MTS College Passes. A parking permit is about $207/semester — on top of AAA's ~$11,577/year to own a car. For a lot of Aztecs, transit + the occasional booked ride beats car ownership outright. Call (858) 522-0264 when you need a ride.

The honest math at SDSU

  • Parking permit: ~$207/semester (~$414/yr) for daytime student parking (SDSU Parking & Transportation).
  • Plus the car itself: ~$11,577/year all-in to own and operate (AAA 2025), before young-driver insurance.
  • Trolley on campus: the SDSU Transit Center (Green Line) connects to Mission Valley, Downtown, and the wider network (SDSU MTS).
  • Discounted transit: MTS College Pass program for eligible students (MTS).
  • Walk/bike/scooter for College Area living and the last mile.

When you actually need a ride

Transit handles class, the gym, and Mission Valley. It doesn't handle the airport with luggage, a trip home, a late night out where a safe direct ride matters, or move-in week. Those few trips a year are worth a flat-rate booked car — still a fraction of owning one. EGT's there for them.

Skip the permit, keep the money

Ride the Trolley day to day; book a flat-rate car for the airport and trips home.

Parents: the move-in window books out — reserve early

EGT's small all-electric fleet is the same one that sells out San Diego's concert and event calendar — twelve dates are fully booked as of July 11. August/September move-in weekends at UCSD, SDSU and USD stack airport pickups, luggage runs and campus drops into the same few days, and slots go to whoever reserved first. A named, vetted driver is confirmed before pickup — the rate never changes with demand. Book the airport pickup the day the flight is ticketed: call or text (858) 522-0264, or see student transportation plans.
