What is actually happening that weekend
The shutdown: scheduled track closures suspend Pacific Surfliner service between San Diego and San Luis Obispo on October 10–11, 2026. Unlike most maintenance weekends, the operator's advisory states plainly that no bus bridges will be provided — the corridor is simply dark. Confirm against the official Pacific Surfliner travel advisories page before you travel.
What it collides with, northbound: Sunday October 11 is Chargers vs Broncos at SoFi Stadium, NFL Week 5, 1:05 PM kickoff — an early kickoff on a day when the train that normally absorbs part of that trip is not running at all. A 1:05 PM start from San Diego is a morning departure, which is exactly the slot the Friday-and-Saturday-evening trains used to cover.
What it collides with, locally: the same Sunday, the San Diego Convention Center runs the California Bridal & Wedding Expo (~5,000 attendees) and the West Coast Conference Cheer and Dance Competition (~6,000) — roughly 11,000 people downtown in one day — plus Taking Back Sunday at Gallagher Square, for KING + COUNTRY at The Rady Shell, and Mastodon at The Sound. Mission Bay Triathlon road closures run 6:00–10:00 AM that morning. Saturday the 10th carries the Gujarati Cultural Dance program downtown (~1,200), the San Diego Gulls home opener at Pechanga Arena (6:00 PM) and Maná at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre (8:30 PM), with the Niteharts Festival running Oct 9–11 at Snapdragon Stadium. Demand up, rail capacity at zero.
Advisory verified against the operator's published travel advisories; checked . Rail status and event details can change — the advisories page above is the source of truth for the shutdown.
Every way to make the trip that weekend — compared honestly
| Option | Roughly | The catch that weekend |
|---|---|---|
| Surfliner train | — | Not running Oct 10–11 (SD–San Luis Obispo), and no bus bridges at all |
| Drive yourself | ~$40–$80 gas + parking | SoFi event parking sells ahead; the Sunday I-5 return after a 1:05 kickoff runs straight into the evening wave |
| Intercity bus | ~$25–$60 | Cheapest seat left standing — expect sell-outs as displaced rail riders shift; downtown-to-downtown only |
| Fly SAN–LAX | varies widely | Adds security + ground transfer on both ends; door-to-door often no faster than driving |
| EGT private car | $425 flat (LAX, any vehicle) · SoFi round trips below | Costs more than the bus — but it is door-to-door, fixed at booking, and immune to the parking and the exit crush |
The cheapest real option is the bus; the fastest door-to-door for a group is a private car. Pick by party size: at 4–5 passengers the flat car rate splits to bus-fare territory without the terminal.
The published rates — unchanged by the shutdown
| Trip | BMW i7 (2) | Rivian R1S (up to 4) | Escalade IQ-L (up to 5) |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Diego → LAX, one way, any county origin | $425 | $425 | $425 |
| — from Chula Vista / South Bay | $445 | $445 | $445 |
| SoFi Stadium round trip (Chargers vs Broncos, Sun Oct 11) | $400 | $450 | $500 |
| Kia Forum / Intuit Dome / YouTube Theater round trip | $400 | $450 | $500 |
Tolls, flight tracking and waiting time are inside the number. No surge, no shutdown premium, no percentage service charge — the published rate is the rate. A full car splits the flat rate per seat: five to SoFi in the IQ-L is $100 a seat, round trip. Other LA destinations (Union Station, downtown LA, the Disneyland corridor): call for the flat quote before you book — you will have the number before you commit.
One round trip per vehicle — and this is a shutdown weekend
Three vehicles. One party each. When they're booked, the weekend is sold out and the cancellation list opens.

If you're traveling alone and your dates are flexible, an intercity bus (FlixBus, Greyhound) still runs I-5 that weekend and a booked-ahead seat is far cheaper than $425. The bus can't do door-to-door, an event return staged to the final whistle, or five people with luggage — that's the lane we occupy. If the bus fits your trip, take it. And if your trip is flexible by a day, Monday October 12 is a normal service day on the corridor.
