When to Leave for LAX from San Diego — by Neighborhood
How far ahead to leave from every San Diego neighborhood, the flat rate for your area, and the curbside advantage: EGT meets you at your LAX terminal while Uber and Lyft get sent to the LAX-it lot.

LAX is about 120 miles / 2–2.5 hours from San Diego off-peak — but I-5 and the 405 can add an hour without warning, so this is the trip where leaving early matters most. Plan to leave central San Diego roughly 5–6 hours before a domestic flight and 6–7 hours before an international one (drive + ~2h domestic / ~3h international at the airport per TSA + buffer). North County is closer, so the drive is shorter. And EGT picks you up curbside at your terminal — no LAX-it shuttle.
The LAX curbside advantage — this is the one that matters
Under current LAX rules, Uber, Lyft, and taxis are no longer allowed at the terminal curb — riders are sent to the remote LAX-it lot (a green-shuttle ride from your terminal, a wait, and an added airport access fee). As a permitted, TCP-licensed private car service, EGT picks you up curbside at the arrivals level, right outside your terminal's baggage claim. After a five-hour travel day, that difference — walking out to your car versus hauling bags onto a shuttle to a remote lot — is the whole experience.

Drive times are off-peak estimates; the I-5/405 corridor routinely adds 45–60 minutes at rush hour, on Fridays, and on holiday weekends. Leave-by windows combine drive time + ~2h domestic / ~3h international at the airport (TSA) + buffer. EGT's LAX rate is one published flat rate — $425 from any San Diego County origin ($445 from Chula Vista / South Bay) (BMW i7, Rivian R1S or Escalade IQ-L, all-in). Reviewed July 2026.
How your LAX pickup works
You choose your meet style before you land; both are included, no upcharge:
- Curbside (most popular). Your driver stages nearby and, the moment you have your bags, you text — the car comes to the arrivals-level curb outside your terminal's baggage claim. No trek to the LAX-it lot, no shuttle, no remote-lot fee. About a 7–10 minute pickup from your text depending on terminal and traffic in the horseshoe.
- Meet-and-greet inside the terminal. Just ask — your driver parks in the terminal garage and walks in to meet you at baggage claim. Ideal for first-time arrivals, VIPs, or guests you're sending.
Know your terminal
LAX has nine terminals (1, 2, 3, the Tom Bradley International Terminal / TBIT, and 4 through 8) arranged in a horseshoe. Arrivals and baggage claim are on the lower level; departures on the upper level. Confirm your terminal with your airline — and your driver tracks your flight, so an early or delayed landing just moves the pickup with you. Call (858) 522-0264 to set the meet plan for your terminal.
The drive, and where it slows down
- The route: I-5 north through Orange County, then the I-405 or I-110 into the LAX area — the standard San Diego → LAX corridor.
- Where it backs up: the I-5 through Orange County (especially near the 405 split), and the 405 approach to LAX. Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings, and holiday weekends are the worst.
- Why the flat rate matters here: when a 2-hour drive becomes 3, a metered or surge fare climbs with it. EGT's rate is locked at booking — the traffic is our problem, not your bill.
EGT vs Uber Black to LAX
On the San Diego → LAX run, Uber Black is commonly $504–$669 one way and moves with demand; EGT is a flat $425 from Downtown. On top of the fare gap, a rideshare arrival at LAX means the LAX-it lot, the shuttle, and the added airport fee — while EGT meets you curbside. Flat price, known car and driver, curbside pickup, 100% electric.
