Procedure ride — flat round trip from $120, escort rides free, no wait charge

Direct answer: Upper endoscopy uses sedation, so you cannot drive afterward and most San Diego units will not discharge you to a rideshare alone. We carry you and your escort — flat round trip $120 / $150 / $175 / $250 by zone, escort free, no wait charge. (858) 522-0264.
TL;DR: Same rule as colonoscopy: sedation, no driving, escort required. We run the two legs and charge nothing for the gap between them.

What the units say

“You will not be allowed to drive home because of the effects of the medication. You should be able to walk out with your escort, and we have wheelchairs available if you need one.”— Sharp HealthCare, published on their own site
“Driver: You must plan to have someone drive you home. Do not plan to use taxis or other public transportation. Escort: A friend, relative or dedicated caregiver MUST stay with you for 24 hours.”— San Diego Endoscopy Center, Hillcrest, published on their own site

San Diego Endoscopy Center adds a detail worth planning around: “Your escort must be available to discuss and sign these instructions before you will be allowed to go home” (source). Your escort has to physically be there at discharge, not just at the curb.

Frequently asked

Can my driver be my responsible adult?

No. 42 CFR 416.52 requires the facility to discharge you in the company of a responsible adult, and a paid driver does not satisfy that. Euclid Endoscopy Center in San Diego says it outright: a responsible adult, "not the taxi driver." We drive you and your escort. We never claim to be the escort.

Does my escort cost extra?

No. The rate is per vehicle. Your escort rides free, both ways.

Do you charge for waiting?

No. Two scheduled legs, no hourly meter. We come back when the unit calls.

Will insurance cover it?

Almost certainly not. Medicare Part B covers ambulance only. Medi-Cal NEMT/NMT is for Medi-Cal members with a provider prescription. UC San Diego Health publishes the caveat itself: "not all forms of medical transport are covered by health plans."

What if I need a wheelchair or gurney?

Then we are the wrong service and we will say so. Those are separately licensed categories in California. We carry ambulatory passengers only.
