Why this is the hardest school run in San Diego

In California, where a child goes to school is a legal-custody decision. When parents share legal custody and disagree, a court weighs the custody schedule, how close each home is to the school, each parent’s availability and the program itself — and agreements very often keep the child at the current school so that the divorce changes as little of the child’s day as possible. Then one household moves: Carmel Valley to Chula Vista, La Mesa to Encinitas, Coronado to Poway. The twelve-minute drop-off becomes forty-five minutes each way on the weeks the far home has the kids.

The pattern we see is always the same. The parent in the far home absorbs the commute and the missed mornings. The exchange drifts from the school to a parking lot. The kids notice. A standing car service removes the variable that is actually causing the friction — the drive — without changing the agreement.

How we set it up

Send the shape of the calendar. Week on/week off, 2-2-3, 2-2-5-5, alternating weeks with a midweek dinner — whatever yours is — plus both home addresses and the bell schedule.
One driver for the whole rotation. The same named, background-checked driver takes every run from both homes, introduced to the family by name. Your child sees one face and one car regardless of whose week it is.
Texts to the right parent. Picked up. Arrived. Sent to the parent whose week it is, or to both parents on every run — you choose once and we do it every time.
Billing the way you two have agreed. One payer, or each parent billed for the legs on their own weeks. The per-leg rate is the same either way. No deposit; billed in arrears.
Exchange days are just runs. School in the morning from Home A, home in the afternoon to Home B. The handoff happens at school, on the school’s schedule, with a driver both parents already know.

A two-home route is quoted, not listed: the owner prices each leg flat for your two addresses and the school, and the number holds for the school year. Then it is arithmetic — your per-leg rate times the legs you actually use.

Compare it to the drive: forty-five minutes each way, twice a day, five days a week is seven and a half hours behind the wheel before traffic. Single-zone school runs are $75 per leg; a cross-town route between two homes is longer, and it is quoted flat once and never metered.

What we are and are not

EGT operates under California PUC charter-party carrier license TCP #0046494-A, which requires DMV Employer Pull-Notice monitoring on every driver, a mandatory drug-and-alcohol testing program and verified $1.5M commercial liability insurance. Drivers are named to you in advance. Vehicles are 100% electric — a BMW i7, a Rivian R1S and a Cadillac Escalade IQ-L — quiet enough that homework happens on the way.

We are not a supervised-exchange service and we do not evaluate, referee or advise on custody. We take direction from the schedule both parents give us in writing, and if the two of you disagree about a run we drive the standing schedule until both of you change it. That is the arrangement that keeps a child out of the middle.

Beyond school: practice, tutoring, the airport

The same driver covers the afternoon sequence — practice at four, tutoring at five, the studio across town — and the run home to whichever house that night is. Can our kids ride with the same driver from both houses?

Yes. One named driver is assigned to the whole rotation, both homes, every week. If that driver is ever unavailable you are told the substitute’s name before the run, never after.

Can both parents get the pickup and arrival texts?

Yes — both parents on every run, or only the parent whose week it is. You choose once at setup; it does not change unless you change it.

Who pays?

Whatever the two of you have agreed: one payer for everything, or each parent billed for the legs on their own weeks. The quoted per-leg rate is the same either way, billed in arrears, no deposit.

What if the custody schedule changes mid-year?

Text the change. There is no contract and no monthly minimum, so the schedule flexes with the agreement — a court-ordered modification, a swapped week, a summer split.

Can Uber or Lyft do this instead?

No. Both platforms require riders to be 18 or older to travel unaccompanied, and Uber suspended its teen-account program in California in December 2024 rather than meet the state’s fingerprint background-check requirement for drivers carrying unaccompanied minors.
