The San Diego Zoo sits in Balboa Park, five minutes from downtown hotels. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a separate 1,800-acre park in the San Pasqual Valley outside Escondido — about 35 miles northeast, 40–45 minutes by car with no rail line and no direct transit. Visitors buy the 2-Visit Pass (one visit to each park, or two to one park, valid a full year, no reservation needed) and then discover they have no realistic way to get to the second park. What the drive-yourself day actually costs
- Balboa Park parking is no longer free: since January 5, 2026, non-resident lots run $10–$16 per day and street meters $2.50/hour near the Zoo.
- Safari Park parking is $20 per vehicle ($45+ preferred, $55 oversized) — on top of a 70-mile round-trip drive at the IRS all-in cost of 76¢/mile (~$53).
- Rideshare to Escondido is a one-way bet: getting out is easy; getting a return driver from the San Pasqual Valley at closing time is not, and surge at park close routinely pushes the ride back over $90–$120.
- Transit does not really go there: no train serves the Safari Park; bus routings from downtown run 2–3 hours each way with transfers.
