The traveling nurse and clinician: an airport ride set against the shift, for the length of the contract

A thirteen week contract means flying in, flying home on off blocks, and flying out, at hours decided by a schedule rather than by you, from housing near a hospital you did not pick. This page is the standing airport ride for that: the address on file, the window set against the shift, and a driver who has done the run before.

Direct answer

Is there a reliable airport car service for travel nurses in San Diego? Yes. Elite Green Transportation sets up a standing airport ride for the length of the contract: your housing and hospital go on file once, every flight is tracked from the gate in both directions, and the pickup window is set against your shift, so a flight home after nights gets an 8 a.m. car and a return that lands at 11:50 p.m. gets met. The rate is the published flat for the housing's zone, $65 to $115 one way for up to two passengers, locked at the start of the contract and unchanged at any hour. Pay after each ride by cash, Zelle, Venmo or a payment link, or on one monthly bill your agency can reimburse.

1. Thirteen weeks, three flights, and the days off in between

A travel nurse contract in San Diego has a shape. Fly in a few days before the start date to a furnished apartment near the hospital. Work three twelves in a row, then have four days off, and on many of those blocks fly home to see a partner, a child or a dog. Fly out at the end of the thirteen weeks, or extend and stay. Every one of those flights is at an hour set by a shift, not by convenience, and every one of them starts from housing you did not choose and may not have a car at.

The standing ride is set up once, at the start of the contract, for the length of it. The housing address goes on file, the hospital goes on file as the reason the hours are what they are, and from then on a text with a flight number is the booking. When the contract ends the pattern ends. When the next contract is also in San Diego, you text the new address and it starts again.

The rate is the published flat for the zone your housing is in, one way, up to two passengers: $65 in Zone 1, $80 in Zone 2, $95 in Zone 3, $115 in Zone 4. Locked at the start of the contract, unchanged at 5 a.m., after a night shift or on a holiday weekend. A round trip is two legs. Full table on the frequent flyer hub.

2. Odd hours and the 6:30 a.m. curfew bank

San Diego International prohibits departures between 11:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. For a clinician that rule cuts two ways.

Coming off a night shift. A shift that ends at 7 a.m. cannot make the first departure bank, which forms at exactly 6:30 and is the busiest hour of the morning. The realistic flight home is mid morning, which means a pickup at the housing around 8 or 8:30 after a handoff that ran long, with a driver who does not need directions and a passenger who is going to sleep in the car. We set the window with the shift end in mind, not the flight alone, and if the handoff runs late you text and the car waits.

Coming off a day shift. A shift that ends at 7:30 p.m. can make the last departures before the 11:30 p.m. cutoff, but only with a pickup that is already arranged. The car is at the housing at the time we set together, and the drive from Hillcrest or La Jolla to the terminal at that hour is short.

Arriving late. The curfew is on departures, not arrivals, so a flight back from a home visit can land close to midnight. We track it from the gate and meet it. That is often the ride a travel nurse most needs and least often has: the return to an apartment at 11:50 p.m., the night before a 7 a.m. start, in a city where the rideshare pickup zone is a long walk and the fare is whatever it is that night.

3. Hospital and housing addresses on file

We keep the housing address on the pattern and the hospital alongside it, so a text that says “flying home Wednesday after nights” is enough for us to know the hour. The zone is set by where you live during the contract, and most contract housing in San Diego sits near the hospital it serves.

Larger vehicles for up to four or five passengers are on the same table at the hub, for the contract where two or three clinicians share housing and a flight home.

4. How the contract pattern runs

  1. One text at the start of the contract: the housing address, the hospital, the shift pattern if you know it, and the dates you expect to fly. If the housing is not confirmed yet, send the hospital and we hold the rest until it is.
  2. Flight number per trip. That is the booking. Every flight is tracked from the gate, in both directions.
  3. The window is set against the shift. For a post nights flight we work from the handoff, not the departure time alone, and the car waits if the handoff runs long.
  4. Same driver when possible. On a three car fleet that is usually possible, and you know the evening before either way, by name.
  5. Pay after each ride by cash, Zelle, Venmo or a payment link, or on one bill at the end of the month, itemized by date. Nothing is due at booking, no deposit, and no charge for a block you do not fly. Gratuity is at your discretion.

If your agency reimburses ground transportation, the itemized monthly bill is the document it wants. If you are away from your tax home on a contract, the IRS lists fares between the airport and your lodging or work location among deductible travel expenses; we are not tax advisors, Topic No. 511 is linked below, and your accountant or agency is the right person to ask.

In fairness. We are three cars, owner operated, and a contract pattern is confirmed against the calendar rather than promised blind. On a marquee event night a pickup can move by fifteen minutes and we tell you the evening before. If a shift runs so long that the flight is lost, you text us the new one and the pattern picks up there; we do not charge for the ride that did not happen. What we cannot do is be a fleet of thirty cars on a Friday night. What we can do is be the same driver at your door at 8:15 a.m. after a night shift, for thirteen weeks.

5. Start the contract pattern

Text (858) 522-0264 with two things: your typical flight pattern and your pickup address. That is the whole application. An owner reads it back to you with the zone rate and the pickup window, and the pattern is on the calendar. If you would rather talk it through, call the same number.

A first text for this pattern: “Thirteen weeks at UCSD Hillcrest starting October 5, nights, housing on Fifth Avenue, I fly home to Phoenix most off blocks, one passenger.” Neighborhood detail for the two most common housing areas: La Jolla to SAN and Mission Valley to SAN.

Start the contract pattern

Text the hospital, the housing address and the dates. An owner reads back the zone rate, and every flight on the contract is covered.

6. Questions traveling clinicians ask

Is there an airport car service for travel nurses on contract in San Diego?

Yes. Elite Green Transportation sets up a standing airport ride for the length of the contract: the housing and hospital go on file once, every flight is tracked from the gate, the pickup window is set against the shift rather than the flight alone, and the rate is the published flat for the housing's zone, $65 to $115 one way for up to two passengers, locked at the start of the contract.

Can I get a ride to the airport straight after a night shift?

Yes. A shift ending at 7 a.m. cannot make SAN's first departure bank at 6:30, so the realistic flight is mid morning and we set the pickup around the handoff, usually 8 to 8:30 a.m. at the housing. If the handoff runs long you text and the car waits. The rate does not change with the hour.

Do you meet flights that land close to midnight?

Yes. SAN's curfew is on departures between 11:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m., not arrivals, so a return from a home visit can land late. We track it from the gate and meet it, and the pickup moves with the aircraft if it is delayed.

What does it cost from housing near UCSD, Sharp or Scripps?

The published flat for the zone the housing is in, one way, up to two passengers: Hillcrest and Mission Valley are Zone 1, $65; La Jolla, UTC, La Mesa and Chula Vista are Zone 2, $80; Encinitas and Escondido are Zone 3, $95; Oceanside is Zone 4, $115. Kearny Mesa and Serra Mesa housing, near Sharp Memorial and Rady Children's, is quoted by zone when you text the address.

How do I pay, and can my agency be billed?

After each ride by cash, Zelle, Venmo or a payment link, or on one bill at the end of the month itemized by date, which is the document most agencies want for reimbursement. Nothing is due at booking, there is no deposit and no charge for an off block you do not fly.
