Where NOT to Park for a Petco Park Game or Concert — and What a Tow Really Costs
The private lots around the East Village look like a bargain next to a $10-an-hour meter. They are tow-away property. Getting your car back in downtown San Diego runs $321 at the City’s own posted rate and $400–$1,000 at private-lot rates. Here are the verified numbers, the law that protects you, and the fix that costs less than one tow.

The direct answer
Do not park in a private business lot, a retail lot, or on a residential street near Petco Park during a game or concert. Those are tow-away private property under California Vehicle Code §22658, and a downtown recovery realistically costs $400 to $1,000. Metered street parking inside the ballpark’s Special Event Parking Zone is $10 per hour for roughly six hours — $40 to $60 for a normal visit. Official and third-party garages run $15 to $60 and sell out. A round-trip private car is $120 in the BMW i7, $160 in the Rivian R1S, $200 in the Escalade IQ-L ($150/$200/$250 for marquee concerts), flat, booked in advance, with no post-game surge.
1. What the Padres actually tell you — and what they leave out
The team’s official transportation page says it plainly: “Due to continued development in the ballpark district, event parking availability will be limited. What the official page does not say is where not to park. There is no warning about private business lots or residential streets anywhere on the Padres’ own site. That gap is why people get towed. Tailgate Park is still operating in 2026 — the Padres’ tailgating rules are live and the East Village Quarter redevelopment has not broken ground — and tailgating is permitted only there, never in any other garage or lot, with gas grills only and no charcoal. Note on lot prices: the Padres publish no per-lot rate card. Any specific lot price you see quoted online is a third-party observation, not an official rate.
2. The meter is $10 an hour, and most people do not know it changed
On September 2, 2025 the City of San Diego created a Special Event Parking Zone around Petco Park. Meters inside it go from $2.50 to $10.00 per hour during major stadium events. sandiego.gov/parking/specialevents
- Where: roughly a half-mile radius of the ballpark — about 200 square blocks bordered by Harbor Drive, State Street, Broadway and Interstate 5, marked by roughly 400 signs.
- When: the rate starts about two hours before first pitch, and before any Petco Park event with more than 10,000 attendees, for roughly a six-hour window.
- What it costs you: a four-to-six hour visit is $40–$60 in meter fees alone — if you find a space.
- Baseline meters elsewhere downtown are enforced Monday–Saturday 8 a.m.–6 p.m., until 8 p.m. in the Hospitality Zone. A $0.35 card transaction fee applies to every meter payment as of November 1, 2025. Meter operations

Check the meter, do not trust the list. The City’s published special-event table for August 2026 lists 11 of the 14 Padres home games — it currently omits August 2, 9 and 23 (all Sundays) — and does not list the August 30 My Chemical Romance concert. 3. What a tow actually costs — the verified numbers
City of San Diego published schedule (as published by the City’s licensed impound provider, fee notice):
- Regular-duty tow (under 9,500 lb GVWR): $178.00
- Storage: $41.00 per day
- Tow & Impound Cost Recovery Fee: $54.00
- After-hours release (after 5 p.m. and weekends): $48.00
- Flatbed/dolly: $47.00 · mileage over 5 miles: $5.50/mile
Same-night recovery after a Padres night game ≈ $321, because the after-hours fee always applies — games let out well after 5 p.m.
Private lots are the expensive ones
Most of the lots ringing the ballpark are privately operated. Figures published by a commercial San Diego tow vendor — a third-party marketing source, not an official schedule, cited here as their stated pricing (source):
- Tow: $250–$400 (more for SUVs, trucks and vans)
- Storage: $60–$100 per day
- Administrative: $50–$100, plus $25–$50 paperwork
- After-hours/weekend retrieval: $50–$100
- “Drop fee” to release before the truck leaves: $100–$150
- Their own worked three-day example: $630; typical range to get a car back $400–$1,000
Know this one. §22658(i)(1)(A) makes a private-lot charge excessive if it exceeds what the law-enforcement-agreement rate would be — that is, the City’s $178 tow and $41-per-day storage. And §22658(j)(1) makes an excessive charge civilly liable for four times the amount charged. A $350 tow with $80-a-day storage is on its face above the City rate.
4. The law, and the four rules worth memorising
California Vehicle Code §22658 and §22953 govern private-property tows. The San Diego City Attorney’s consumer alert, Know Your Rights When Your Vehicle is Towed From Private Property (August 2024), is the plainest official summary: cao-civ-tow-info.pdf
- The one-hour rule — and its limits. §22953(a): an owner of private property open to the public for free parking may not tow within one hour of the vehicle being parked. It does not apply if you are within 15 feet of a hydrant, in a fire lane, blocking an entrance or exit, or in a disabled space. Violation = civil liability for two times the charges.
- Signage. §22658(a)(1): a sign at least 17″ × 22″ with lettering at least 1″ high, in plain view at all entrances, stating that public parking is prohibited and vehicles will be removed at the owner’s expense, with the local traffic-enforcement phone number and the name and number of each towing company under contract. If the signage rules were not met, §22658(e)(1) gives you double the towing and storage charges.
- The hook-up rule. §22658(h): if you return after your car is coupled to the truck but before it leaves the property, the charge is capped at no more than one half of the regular towing charge. §22658(g) requires immediate, unconditional release of any vehicle not yet in transit — refusing is a misdemeanour. The City Attorney states it directly: the driver cannot demand payment to release your vehicle in that situation.
- The rest of your protections. Released within 24 hours means only one day’s storage (§22658(i)(2)); the storage lot must be within a 10-mile radius (§22658(n)(1)(A)); an after-hours gate fee is capped at half the hourly tow rate (§22658(n)(2)(B)); and they must accept a valid credit card, with four times civil liability for refusing (§22658(k)). At five passengers the Escalade IQ-L is $40 per seat, round trip — less than the meter, and less than one hour of a private-lot tow.
6. August 2026 at Petco — when this matters most
14 Padres home games: August 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26. Road trips fall August 3–6, 14–19 and 28–31.

One honest caveat
If you are two people, arriving early, staying late, and you already hold a pre-purchased official lot pass, driving yourself is fine and probably cheaper than a round-trip car. This page is not an argument that nobody should drive. It is an argument that the free-looking private lot is the single most expensive parking decision available in the East Village, and that almost nobody prices it correctly before they make it.
