What getting to a Padres game actually costs now

In September 2025 the City of San Diego quadrupled parking meter rates from $2.50 to $10 per hour in a 200-square-block "special event zone" within a half-mile of Petco Park (Source: NBC 7 San Diego). The rules:

• $10/hour applies from two hours before to four hours after first pitch at every Padres game and any stadium event over 10,000 guests.
• The zone is big: south of Broadway, west of Interstate 5, east of State Street, north of Harbor Drive and S. 16th Street — essentially the Gaslamp, East Village, and the ballpark district.
• Six-hour meter limits during events — an extra-innings game plus dinner can tick past your meter.
• Evening enforcement extended — meters now charge as late as 10 p.m.; the era of free street parking after 6 p.m. on game nights is over.
• The Padres organization itself called it a 700% increase over the prior year's rate and said it makes attending "significantly more expensive for fans."

The hike is working as designed for the city: per-game parking revenue jumped from roughly $2,100 to around $23,000, and 2026 is the first full Padres season under the new rates (Source: KPBS, March 2026). Compare the math: five or six hours at game-day meters is $50–$60 per car before you've bought a ticket — and that's the cheap option that requires winning the street-spot lottery inside a 200-block premium zone. Five people in the Escalade IQ-L pay $40 each for the whole evening, door to door.

EGT flat rate vs Uber Black

Uber Black is a premium, metered tier that surges in high-demand windows — and the post-game scrum outside Petco is the worst one. You pay two legs, each surged separately, with the ride home hit hardest, and there's no locked price until you're at the curb with 40,000 other people.

EGT is one flat number, both ways: $120 (BMW i7, two) or $200 (Escalade IQ-L, up to five — $40/person), set at booking. On a quiet night an Uber Black round trip can land in the same range; on a game-night surge — commonly reported at 1.5–3× the base fare during peak egress — the metered fare is exactly what climbs past a flat rate, while your named driver is already staged downtown. And surge isn't the only lever — a 2026 Consumer Reports study found Uber and Lyft quoting riders different prices for the same ride at the same time (a median gap near 50%) using AI-driven surveillance pricing. EGT's published rate is the same for every rider.

How game night works with EGT

• Pickup: your named driver arrives at your door — La Jolla, North County coastal, Chula Vista, anywhere in metro San Diego — timed so you're at the gates when you want to be.
• Drop: Fifth Avenue at the gates of the Gaslamp, by Lou & Mickey's (224 Fifth Ave) — a short walk to the ballpark through the Gaslamp. It is EGT's preferred drop because it sits outside the queue that forms on the Park Boulevard and 10th Avenue side, so you are out of the car and walking while that line is still crawling. No garage queue, no half-mile walk from a metered spot.
• During the game: the driver stages downtown. Extra innings cost you nothing — the rate is flat.
• Return: the same Fifth Avenue curb, or after a post-game dinner in the Gaslamp while everyone else sits in garage egress. Walking two minutes away from the stadium exit is faster than waiting at it — and the Gaslamp street grid gets a car moving before the Park Boulevard crush clears. Downtown egress, August 9–13, 2026. Caltrans District 11 announced on August 6, 2026 that the westbound SR-94 connector to northbound I-5 is closed from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., Sunday, August 9 through Thursday, August 13, for guardrail and concrete barrier work, with a detour via 25th Street and F Street to the northbound I-5 on-ramp. Caltrans also lists the eastbound SR-94 connector to northbound SR-15 and I-805 closed 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., Monday, August 10 to Tuesday, August 11. Those windows overlap the walk-out from a night game. A driver who is already routed around it gets you home; a surge fare on a detoured corridor just costs more.

It's a real amenity — but it's 20 stalls for 40,000+ fans, so if you drive your own EV you're still hunting a charger and paying the $10/hour game-day meter zone around it.
